Bookbinding for The Token of Dorian Gray

We are a small, private press, and we hand bind our books in batches of ten at a time. We thought our readers might enjoy seeing the steps that are involved in the binding process for this limited edition book. Below are photos and links to videos of sewing and “casing in.” If you have any questions about the printing or bookbinding of this limited edition book, please ask!

Happy reading,

Stephanie

Limited Edition Binding for this book includes these steps:

  • collating the printed signatures

  • punching sewing holes in the middle of each signature in the punching cradle

  • sewing all 7 of the signatures into a full text block for the book in the sewing frame on sewing tapes

  • printer’s registration marks are trimmed off on the guillotine

  • “backing” the book: Japanese paper, mull, and another soft paper are attached to the spine along with the headbands using archival quality PVA

  • making the covers

  • “casing in” the text block

  • hot foil stamping the titles and attaching them to the case, adding the gold padlock heart to the bookmark
